Casino etiquette for a first visit

The rules on the floor are written down. The ones that matter mostly aren't. Here's what we tell friends.

Our dining room sits nineteen floors above a casino floor, so we field the question weekly: 'We're going down after dinner — what do we need to know?' This is the answer we give, cleaned up for print.

What to wear

The Star Gold Coast runs smart casual after dark — collared shirt is the safe line, clean sneakers pass, thongs don't. If you were dressed right for dinner with us, you're dressed right for downstairs.

Getting in

Bring photo ID — driver's licence or passport — regardless of how obviously over eighteen you are. Entry conditions apply and security's discretion is final. If you're on one of our hosted packages, the host walks you through it all.

At the tables

The unwritten rules: wait for a hand to finish before sitting, don't touch other players' chips, and if you're unsure what to do, ask the dealer before the cards come out — not during. Nobody cares how much you're playing; they care whether you're slowing the table. Watching a few hands first is always respected.

Tipping & thanks

Australia doesn't run on tips the way America does, but a chip for a dealer who's run a good table is customary and noticed. Drinks service on the floor works the same way.

Pace yourself

Set a number before you sit down and treat it as spent the moment it leaves your pocket — that's the whole trick. The floor is designed to make hours disappear. The best casino nights end with a decision you made before you started, not after. And if it stops being fun, the bar upstairs is the right place to land.

Dinner first, then the floor

The dine-and-play packages handle the entry logistics — book the evening, not the hassle.
